The STARS Education and Research Alliance (SERA)

Metro North Hospital and Health Service (MNHHS) will operate the Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS)– part of the Herston Health Precinct, one of Australia’s largest integrated health and knowledge precincts. STARS is a new greenfield and digital, specialist public health facility which is due to officially open in 2021. It has been designed to deliver a range of new and expanded healthcare services to meet demand and increase patient access to specialist rehabilitation services, elective surgical and endoscopy procedural services.

The University of Queensland and MNHHS have formed the STARS Education and Research Alliance (SERA) with a goal to lead innovation in care, training and research in specialist surgical and complex rehabilitation services. The partnership will embed clinical education and research to achieve improved outcomes for people with complex rehabilitation needs, and will provide UQ students with access to a high standard of quality clinical exposure and complex rehabilitation services. The facility will begin clinical placements from 2021, with placements available to UQ students in nursing, physiotherapy, physiotherapy, speech pathology, audiology, nutrition and dietetics, clinical psychology, social work and rehabilitation medicine.

About This Opportunity

These positions will be responsible for enhancing the research capacity and capabilities of both MNHHS and UQ within their relevant discipline area. The research fellows will lead/participate in interprofessional program areas of research aligned with core STARS clinical priorities/research themes. They will also be required to plan, undertake and publish clinically-based research activities under the general direction of the SERA Director, as well as STARS and UQ supervisors in the discipline area.

The positions will also involve the supervision of the UQ honours, masters and PhD students who are undertaking research at STARS, as well as supporting interprofessional research, quality assurance and evidence-based practice activities being undertaken at the University and at STARS.

The positions are primarily based at the STARS facility within the Herston Health Precinct, however may involve work at other sites as required.

Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful for this opportunity, you will hold a PhD in a relevant discipline area, partnered with a growing or established research profile. You will be developing a reputation and track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, as well as evidence of either contributions toward or obtaining and managing external research funding. You will be able to demonstrate an ability to apply judgement and advisory skills to develop effective professional partnerships to inform clinical outcomes through research. Finally, you will bring effective interpersonal and communication skills, which will allow you to provide leadership and establish effective working relationships with staff, senior management, and other relevant bodies.

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 3 years, with a possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and subject to funding. The employing entity of this position will be UQ, at either Academic Research Level A, B or C (Physiotherapy discipline only).
