Job Description:

Under the direction of senior scientists, conduct field experiments on sugarcane Seedling Stage to develop strategies for increased efficiency and accuracy of seedling and parental selection. Complete experiments in a timely manner and disseminate the information to scientists supervising other stages of the sugarcane breeding program. Participate in making seedling selections, and coordinate and supervise laborers and temporary employees during the selection process, progeny test, and breeding values experiment.

Manage the greenhouse and transplanting phases of sugarcane seedling production and progeny test. Activities include but are not limited to: a) sowing of sugarcane seed; b) transplanting of seedlings to cell trays; c) transplanting seedlings to field; and d) greenhouse experiment maintenance, including daily and often after-hours fertilizing, irrigation, and pest control.

Under the direction of senior scientists, conduct field experiments on sugarcane Stage I to develop strategies for increased efficiency and accuracy of seedling and parental selection. Complete experiments in a timely manner and disseminate the information to scientists supervising other stages of the sugarcane breeding program. Participate in planting Stage I, making Stage I selections, and coordinate and supervise laborers and temporary employees during the selection process, including extensive gathering of brix, vigor, and disease rating data.

Office productivity activities to include a) data entry for field, laboratory, and greenhouse experiments using Microsoft Office software, b) set up, application design, programming, and use of electronic tablet computers.

Serve as field and laboratory supervisor on a day-to-day basis. Supervise laborers and temporary employees. Communicate protocols to these employees.

Carry out routine molecular biology laboratory procedures, including, but not limited to DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis.

Under the direction of senior scientists, conduct field experiments on sugarcane Stage II to develop strategies for increased efficiency and accuracy of seedling and parental selection. Complete experiments in a timely manner and disseminate the information to scientists supervising other stages of the sugarcane breeding program. Participate in planting Stage II, making Stage II selections, and coordinate and supervise laborers and temporary employees during the selection process, including extensive gathering of brix, stalk count, vigor, disease rating, weight, etc., data.

Assist in design of field and greenhouse experiments.

Expected Salary:

$44,700 annual salary

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in the area of specialization on agronomy, genetics or plant biology. Prior experience in agronomic row crops, agrochemicals, conducting field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments preferred. Computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet, statistical software). Efficient communication skills (both oral and written). Great work skills at both team and independent levels. Valid Florida Driver’s License.
