Job Description:

The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking candidates for a Laboratory Technician II position performing basic animal surgical procedures, conduct in vivo and in vitro experiments in neuroscience, maintain research database, and manage laboratory activities (budgeting, compliance, training of undergraduate assistants and volunteers). All work performed is under the direction of the Principal Investigator.

Duties to include:

  • Assist with basic surgical procedures on laboratory animals. Basic procedures will include surgical exposure of arteries, neck dissection, etc. (according to IACUC protocol). This involves the ability to use a dissecting microscope and the ability to close an incision using sutures. Administer anesthesia to animals. Administer SQ, IV, IP and IM injections. Euthanize animals by injection of euthanasia solution. Foster open communication with veterinary staff and animal husbandry staff.
  • Conduct in vivo and in vitro experiments in neurovascular research. Analyze tissues using immunohistochemistry, fluorescent microscopy, and confocal microscopy. Perform ELISAs to quantify proteins of interest and analyze data. Maintain breeding colonies to produce transgenic animals. Perform DNA/RNA extraction followed by PCR and other analysis. Assess results and modify techniques as needed. Unsupervised work: Research PubMed articles. Ensure that experiments are completed in a timely manner. Asses results and assist in modifying existing techniques/develop new procedures, as needed. Assist in analyzing data. Assist in preparing written reports and power point presentations of research findings.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a database of all research results. Retrieve and manipulate computerized data to be used in publications and presentations. Obtain, analyze and store digital images acquired during immunohistochemistry, fluorescent microscopy, confocal

Expected Salary:

$15.50 - $17.00 per hour

Minimum Requirements Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience
Preferred Qualifications:

Two or more years of experience in laboratory small animal experiment

Experience with research rodents

Experience with Microsoft Office software
