About The Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory “SUPL”

The Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory “SUPL” is located within Stawell Gold Mine (SGM) in Stawell, Victoria. More specifically, it is a unique facility, located 1050m underground within SGM for the purposes of conducting high sensitivity and innovative long-term physics experiments that require a radiation quiet environment. SUPL is an exciting, publicly funded scientific collaboration between government bodies, research bodies and institutions, and local community. SUPL will be utilised by research teams from the Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics (CDM) seeking to solve one of the biggest mysteries of the universe through their search for dark matter.

About the Role

The SUPL Facility & Laboratory Manager will be responsible for the managing the operation of the overall SUPL facility, with a major focus on safety, coordination of occupancy and access to the facility, and maintaining a close working relationship with SGM. They will be responsible for the on-site day-to-day management of the SUPL (including safety procedures, scheduling, access, coordination of planned and unplanned repair and maintenance activities) and for oversight of all arrangements (including on-site transport, induction, safety) for personnel involved in the conduct of experiments and related activities within SUPL, including approved visitors. This position also oversees and coordinates access arrangements for any contractor groups and project managers involved in the construction of research experiments in the laboratory. The SUPL management of the facility also requires managing/limiting occupancy of the site to ensure mine safety protocols are maintained.
