Geothermal Drilling Lead
Work Location: Perth
Roster: Monday to Friday
This is an exciting opportunity to get in at the ground level of a rapidly expanding, dynamic, global green energy business. The FFI geothermal portfolio is currently focused on developing a number of projects internationally. Many other global opportunities are currently being assessed. This role will be responsible for forming the strategy and building the capability in Geothermal drilling. The successful candidate will assist with the strategic options assessment and costing for Well design and construction. This will include market and technology assessments, strategic operational planning, and safety design and management.
Key accountabilities will include:
- Preparing, scheduling, coordinating, and monitoring assigned Geothermal drilling projects, with a focus on minimising capital and operating/maintenance costs within Geothermal energy projects and providing reliable inputs for cost modelling
- Early focus areas:
- Define optimum well design and construction for various typical operational reservoir targets
- Drive study into drilling methods and technology development
- Define Geothermal drilling safety standards and procurement strategy
- Market research into drilling contractors and support services
- Manage interfaces with stakeholders including Project Teams, Rig and Service Contractors, Regulatory body, Engineering and Operations Readiness
- Actively participate in the discussion for the drilling sequence and integrated planning
- Fully own, support GWDP (Global Well Delivery Process) processes and controls
- Own and maintain well engineering opportunity funnels and risk registers
- Own and maintain the cost and schedule for the global drilling projects and progress improvement opportunities
- Ensure the well designs can meet the project functional requirements
- Ensure robust supporting engineering studies are in place for assurance
- Ensure the well programs can be executed safely and in accordance with agreed objectives, statutory regulations and company policies
- Ensure plans are in place that allow operational flexibility in order to meet the project and well objectives
- Provide guidance and expert judgment to the Ops Team and the site Supervisors on all matters related to the operations of a rig and the specific programme
- Maintain and control the availability and quality of the services and equipment provided under the contracts
- Tracking of progress against schedule, including identification and follow-up with deliverable and disciplines not under direct well engineering control
Qualifications and skills required:
- Prior experience in high temperature drill planning and execution is essential
- Experience specifically in Geothermal drilling preferred
- Management of multiple drilling teams in a range of geographies preferred
- Minimum of 15 years drilling experience with at least 5 years of recent experience in geothermal drilling operations
- Highly developed technical skills with theoretical knowledge reinforced by practical experience
- In depth knowledge of engineering processes, calculations, equipment and operational procedures
- Previous experience working as a Senior Well Engineer or Drilling Supervisor essential
- Previous experience with contractor intake and startup is valued
- Experience in planning, negotiating, and implementing complex drilling services agreements
Proven track record of integrating dispersed and remote teams successfully
- A Bachelor's degree in Engineering
- Masters degree in Geothermal engineering preferred
- Relevant HSSE qualifications for geothermal drilling operations
- Valid IWCF certificate preferred
