The University of Florida is currently recruiting for an expert in security and technology to direct UF’s campus safety and security systems. Serving as a central authority, this important new position will have responsibility for spearheading an expansion of the university’s access control, surveillance and technological footprint. This is an opportunity to make a significant impact at a top-10 research university, serving over 55,000 students and 31,000 employees, and covering facilities totaling more than 25 million square feet on a 2,000 acre campus and beyond.

Role of Director, Security and Technology

The director of security and technology provides expert leadership to the university through senior oversight of safety and security system databases, physical security designs, and campus-wide planning for physical security. The position reports directly to the vice president for business affairs and works in collaboration with Office of the General Counsel, UFIT, UF Police Department and senior administration on security policy development. In addition to exercising direct supervision of building security assistants and technicians, the position provides direction and guidance to other directors and managers on safety and security projects.

Priorities for this role are oversight of security system and physical security design; campus security monitoring; policy development and compliance review; and external service support.

Opportunities and Expectations

Security system and physical security design: Evaluates and recommends new security and technology strategies. Develops and maintains university-wide design standards for range of facility and space sizes and types as well as security operations. Anticipates safety and security trends. Ensures identification and adequate provisioning of appropriate systems and physical security applications.

Campus security monitoring: Oversees management and monitoring of internal resources relative to security system needs. Serves as liaison for external safety and security vendors and manufacturers on design and integration strategies. Partners with UFPD on campus surveillance plans and layout of security operations and support systems, including card reader access, closed circuit cameras, critical incident and emergency planning strategies, and other safety/security plans.

Policy development and compliance: With campus partners, develops policies and processes for audit and reporting. Ensures and maintains compliance with design standards and life, fire and security industry practices. Develops and manages departmental programs for key control, electronic access control, CCTV, alarms management and emergency notification. Performs security audits to identify security vulnerabilities and safety concerns.

External service support: Develops and manages collaborative service support partnership between consultants, internal clients and UF business units. Oversees or coordinates with system vendors and manufacturers on technical troubleshooting efforts. Develops comprehensive quality assurance process for electronic systems and physical security programs. Reports to senior management on system audits.

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in an appropriate area and six years of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and eight years of relevant experience. This position requires compliance with UPD's Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in selecting and implementing security solutions for a large or complex organization
  • Expert knowledge of best practices and standards in security and technology and an understanding of emerging trends in public safety
  • In-depth understanding of physical security protocols in university or public settings
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing and implementing information management systems
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills that support effective interactions with senior administrators, campus collaborators, managers, technical staff, vendors and others
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships and collaborate across technical and operational lines
