Automation and Controls Engineer - Manufacturing
Work Location: Gladstone, Queensland
FFI is transforming regional Australia through green industry manufacturing with a Global Green Energy Manufacturing Centre (GEM) in Gladstone, Queensland. Stage one of the six-stage project will establish Australia’s first multi-gigawatt-scale electrolyser factory – a world-class facility with an initial capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW) per annum – more than doubling current global production.
Fortescue plans to establish its first Vocational Training and Employment centre (VTEC) in Queensland at GEM, in addition to Trade Up and Leadership and Excellence programs, with a strong focus on giving a hand up to Traditional Custodians.
The Automation and Controls Engineer - Manufacturing supports the Plant Engineering team to conduct all activities within agreed operating, maintenance guidelines and procedures to increase the overall efficiency of the equipment and production lines. This person will also continually work to optimize the process, equipment and maintenance program to achieve overall process efficiency and cost reduction.
Key accountabilities will include:
- Ensure all related activities are performed in accordance with FFI / FMG policy, contractual agreements, quality standards, health, safety and & environment requirements, financial targets, as well as schedule commitments
- Executes the assigned work according to agreed work flows and in accordance with FFI standard processes and safety guidelines. Perform PLC programming / troubleshooting. Implement measures to sustain high OEE on assigned automation line, including robotics, material handling and conveyancing
- Implement new equipment installs, upgrades and decommissioning, perform pre-start checks and configurations during all stages of change management
- Responds to emergencies/break-downs. Reports for records all recurring problems with machinery, equipment and parts that can be identified and addressed.
- Assess facilities, systems, and/or processes anomalies or degraded conditions to prevent unplanned downtime
- Solves major technical, equipment or facilities problems in order to achieve higher performance of the production lines. Maintains tools and repair equipment in good working order
- Implement Plant Engineering program elements as assigned
- Interface with subcontractors, vendors, and program teams to develop and implement improvements, cost savings and safe process
- Sets calibration, adjusts equipment, machinery and instruments so that they comply with production specifications and instructions
- Plan and execute preventative maintenance on automation lines
- Recommend and implement predictive maintenance features where feasible
- Manage and maintain adequate spares to meet OEE requirements
- Implements health, safety and environmental guidelines and directives to ensure safety of people and resources
Qualifications and skills required:
- Degree-qualified with at least 3 years’ experience in electrical, mechanical or mechatronics
- Must have PLC programming, controls wiring and programming experience
- Preferably have experience with working articulated robots, Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and other industrial systems but not limited to pneumatics, hydraulics or hybrid systems
- Committed to Workplace health and safety
- Demonstrated ability to lead, influence and build effective relationships at all levels
- Strategic planning and project management skills with an understanding of budget administration
- Well-developed leadership, coaching and facilitation skills
- Proactive and self-motivated, with a drive for excellence
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Skilled in problem solving rapidly
