The Opportunity

This full-time permanent status accruing Extension Agent will work jointly for UF/IFAS Extension and Gulf County. The candidate will lead a county 4-H Youth Development program (about 60% effort) and a Family and Consumer Sciences program (about 40% effort) in cooperation with local citizens, organizations, volunteers, businesses, and agencies plus county and state extension colleagues.

4-H program responsibilities will include volunteer recruitment and training, youth leadership and citizenship, STEM, and club development and management. Based on community needs, FCS program responsibilities could include nutrition, health, wellness, financial management, community development, consumer education, family development, or related topics.

The candidate and their volunteers will strengthen current educational programs while reviewing and implementing new educational opportunities, maintaining records and reports, and communicating effectively across social media platforms. This role provides the opportunity to make a positive impact in Gulf County as the candidate serves as a role model to the community shapes future generations.

The candidate will be able to:

  • Build a diverse advisory committee composed of citizens and professionals that will assist with program priorities and design.
  • Obtain financial resources to support programs and manage all components (e.g., policies, records, risk, communication, and accountability).
  • Cooperate in interdisciplinary projects.
  • Produce creative works and audience-friendly publications.
  • Serve as an educational first responder for county and university functions during natural disasters.

Gulf County is a coastal, rural community located on the Gulf of Mexico, 90 miles southwest of Tallahassee, the state capital. The main extension office for Gulf is in Wewahitchka and a satellite office is in Port St. Joe. Gulf County has a population of approximately 14,000, of which the 4-H youth population is estimated at 3,000.

Employment is contingent upon the results of a national background screening.

Candidates must have the ability to possess (or be able to obtain) a Florida driver’s license, be able to work flexible hours, and the willingness to occasionally work long and irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and overnight travel. Overnights with volunteers and youth and professional development travel is required.

Minimum Requirements:
  • A bachelor’s degree in youth development, family and consumer sciences, agriculture, education, nutrition, dietetics, health and wellness, or a related field.
  • Self-starting, energetic, and team oriented.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Resourcefulness, creativity, enthusiasm, and innovativeness.
  • Good organizational development and management skills.
  • Ability to establish solid partnerships and work in teams.
  • Ability to use information and educational technology.
  • Ability to apply social media to extension work.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A master’s degree. If hired solely with a bachelor’s degree, we want you to continue to grow in your career. As such, we expect you to make at least 50% progress towards obtaining your master’s degree within the first 6 years of employment.
  • Experience in creating lesson plans, developing instructional materials, and applying teaching methods appropriate for the audience.
  • Expertise in getting groups to work together for a higher goal, ability to manage competing priorities, and adaptability to handle unexpected situations.
