Title: Senior Engine Calibration Engineer – Green Fleet Development
Work location: Perth based (Hazelmere)
Roster: 5/2 roster
In support of Fortescue’s strong focus on green energy and our carbon neutrality targets, one of our key initiatives will be in our Green Fleet projects whereby we will develop and test a range of technologies to power our mining fleet.
Based at our new Hazelmere R&D facility, we are looking for an experienced Senior Engine Calibration Engineer to work on a dynamic range of Green Fleet Development projects.
Key accountabilities will include:
- Reporting to the Control Systems Delivery Principal to develop all aspects of engine calibration and associated vehicle interfaces for heavy duty internal combustion engines
- Turn-key engine and vehicle calibration development, verification and validation including:
- Specification and co-ordination of detailed engine and vehicle testing including instrumentation, data logging & test facility requirements
- Design of experiment (DOE) and data post processing
- Calibration and validation of sensors and actuators
- Diagnostics and fault detection
- Population of calibration maps for physical model and empirical model-based control strategies
- Steady-state and transient engine operation
- Engine starting, warm-up, hot, cold and ambient pressure compensation calibration
- Engine speed and load control strategy calibration
- Electrical or other external load compensation
- Development and release of calibration verification and validation plans to meet performance and operability functional requirements
- Formal calibration release process development, implementation, and documentation
- Continuous improvement of engine calibration methodologies and standards to improve calibration quality and reduce calibration time and effort
- Collaborate with control strategy engineer and embedded software engineer to debug and refine the engine control strategies and calibration methodologies
- Work in close conjunction with other engineering disciplines and the project management team for overall project design and integration
Qualifications and skills required:
- Bachelor of Automotive, Electronics, Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering
- 7+ years experience in automotive or related industry with internal combustion engine development
- In depth understanding of reciprocating internal combustion engine operation, fuel injection, air flow, transient response, calibration, and diagnostics
- Experience with calibration tools and engine controller hardware
- Experience with engine and vehicle testing including instrumentation, data acquisition and test facilities
- Familiar with model-based software, e.g. Matlab/Simulink
- Experience working with dual fuel and gas injection systems is highly advantageous
- Experience working with heavy duty diesel engines is highly advantageous
- Proven ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and in multidiscipline teams
- Strong, effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to learn fast and adapt to an environment with dynamic process and program requirements
