The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering (HWCOE) at the University of Florida (UF) invites applications for a nine-month, time-limited, full time, non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Research Assistant Scientist in the Department of Civil and Coastal Engineering. Initial appointment will be for one year with annual re-appointments based on performance and available funding.

We are seeking applicants with expertise in theoretical and numerical modeling of excitable dynamical systems, with applications to statistical mechanics and kinetic descriptions of mesoscale brain activity (collective neural activity). This line of research into cognition has been active in ESSIE for 10 years, produced 4 PhD graduates and robust funding from NIH. In addition to having a doctorate degree in physics, applied mathematics, engineering, or a related discipline, the applicant must possess a strong background in neuroscience, and demonstrate potential for research excellence, and a willingness to conduct research on cross-disciplinary science topics. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and sustain an externally funded research program, develop a high-quality publication record, supervise Ph.D. students, and teach graduate courses.

Within the HWCOE, ESSIE is a vibrant, interdisciplinary, and highly collaborative environment, consistently ranked among the top departments for both graduate and undergraduate programs. It offers BS, MS, and PhD degree programs with an enrollment of ~700 full-time undergraduate students and over 300 graduate students, of which ~125 are PhD students. Currently, ESSIE has 47 tenured/tenure-track faculty, including 17 ASCE Fellows and 12 NSF CAREER award winners. The CCE and EES graduate and undergraduate programs are all ranked among the top 20 for public universities, and the departments lead several university-wide interdisciplinary institutes, including the Center for Coastal Solutions, the UF Transportation Institute, and the H.T. Odum Center for Wetlands. This hire will capitalize on existing strengths across UF, ESSIE, and the HWCOE and be strongly positioned to compete for funding across multiple federal programs.

Expected Salary:

Salary to commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

PhD in physics, applied mathematics, engineering, or related field is required, as well as experience and excellence (demonstrated by publication record) in data analysis, modeling of nonlinear dynamical systems, and statistical mechanics, applied to neuroscience research. The preferred candidate will have skills in numerical modeling techniques, linear and nonlinear time-series analysis, pattern formation and wave turbulence.
