Salary:£41,307 - £61,175 (depending on skills and experience) + car/cash allowance

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time, 37 hours | Flexible working patterns available

What is the Role?

Due to continued growth, we are looking for Substation Design Engineers to join our Major Projects Engineering Design Team based in Reading.

The Major Projects Engineering Design team carry out the design work for capital asset replacement / reinforcement and new electricity connections. Our responsibility is to respond to challenging changes in our licence obligations, and growing levels of competition, with an annual budget in the region of £70M.

As a Design Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and managing a project from initial high level scope, through detailed design and costing to a full pre-construction file. This includes site layouts / line route designs, stage by stage plans, plant and installation specifications, tendering and tender evaluation. You will lead a team to develop these value engineered designs in a timely, cost effective, safe and efficient manner.

Once you become familiar with SSEN working and operating practices you will be able to work from home or from alternate SSEN office. All that we ask is you work from the office once or twice a week in addition to attending team briefs and gate meetings in person.

What do I need?

You'll have experience in the design and specification of sub-station schemes up to either 33kV or 132kV as a designer or in an operational role. A minimum HNC in a relevant subject is preferred, in addition to experience in this field with a DNO, ICP or a supplier to the industry. A knowledge of Project Management and MS Office methodology is required.

It is essential all of our Design Engineers are delivery focussed, have good communication skills and have previous experience in applying the Construction, Design and Management Regulations 2015 to technically complex projects, ideally as a Principle Designer. There will be a requirement to work to tight timescales, and provide first class customer service at all stages of the project; therefore, the ability to thrive under pressure is essential. It is also important that you have an eye on long term development, and are able to identify and implement innovative and effective business improvements.
