OPS Part-Time Lab Technician - Insect Vector & Public Health

Job Description:

The Insect Vector and Public Health Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated OPS undergraduate student research assistant. Ideally, the student will have prior field experience conducting mosquito and tick related research, although only some experience with scientific research is required. The individual will be responsible for collecting mosquitoes and ticks using different trapping techniques, data entry, mosquito colony maintenance. Training will be provided for all field activities and laboratory activities including RNA, DNA extraction and gel electrophoresis if needed.

The OPS student will aid with various research projects and assist with other laboratory duties as necessary. Wearing proper personal protective equipment in field and lab is required. The individual will meet with faculty supervisor on regular basis to maintain ongoing communication regarding the quality and progress of the assistant’s on the research project,

Expected Salary:

$12-$14 per hour

Minimum Requirements:
  • Must be a current UF student

    • This position is open to all students who are eligible to work on campus and will be employed through student Other Personnel Services (OPS) and must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Registered students are employed on a part-time basis, up to 20 hours per week.

  • Demonstrated proficiency of general laboratory practices

  • Ability to work well independently and with others

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Attention to detail, data entry, and research skills

  • Driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience with mosquito or tick related field work

  • Statistical skills

  • Molecular biological skills
