Job Description:

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK), Monterotondo (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain). The EMBL Hamburg site at the DESY campus performs research in structural biology with specific emphasis on the use of synchrotron radiation. EMBL Hamburg runs two macromolecular crystallography (MX) beamlines and a Small Angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) beamline at the high-brilliance storage ring PETRA III. Applications are invited for a senior technical officer (STO) position in the BioSAXS team. The team maintains and develops the EMBL P12 BioSAXS beamline at PETRA III, including time-resolved (TR), anomalous and high-throughput SAXS (ASAXS and HT-SAXS) for life-science research, and runs an extensive user program. We are looking for an STO with a strong background and strong interest in BioSAXS instrumentation and the application of SAXS for structural biological research, spanning macromolecules to biomaterials.

This is a scientific technical role where the successful candidate will work with both the SAXS and Instrumentation teams at EMBL-Hamburg. The tasks of STO position include: The post-holder will be encouraged to develop their own research projects, ideally related to the further development of the beamline (TR-SAXS, ASAXS, HT-SAXS), in particular in view of a possible upgrade of the PETRA synchrotron. As the beamlines at EMBL Hamburg are operated 24/7 during the PETRA III runs, this position requires (and allows for) a flexible working schedule.

You should be able to work both independently and in close collaboration with the BioSAXS and Instrumentation team members as well as the diverse external research groups who access P12 on a yearly basis. Good communication and interpersonal skills, as well as very good knowledge of English, are therefore required.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises from a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus. EMBL has a large thriving community of bioinformaticians, working in close collaboration with experimental scientists and with strong links to other local scientists and institutions.

We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with approximately 2000 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome. Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research. Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
