Job Description:

Following an announcement by the Tasmanian Government, a Public Health Direction was issued on 10 September 2021 requiring that all Health Workers are vaccinated against COVID-19. This step is critical in protecting both our health workforce and vulnerable Tasmanians in our care.

Applicants for any position within the Department of Health must be prepared to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of their employment.

The Department of Health is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Head of Department - General Medicine vacancy.

The Head of Department General Medicine provides leadership to the Department of General Medicine, working under the governance of the Clinical and Nursing Directors of the Acute Medical Stream.

The General Medical team is a dynamic team who provide the clinical care for the largest cohort of unscheduled care in the Royal Hobart Hospital.

The applicant must demonstrate appropriate leadership skills and the ability to work within in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Salary

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicants dependent on clinical experience and seniority.

Classification

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.

Period of Employment

Permanent part-time day work, working 38 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible.

Essential Requirements:

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements)

It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. Primary Purpose:

  • In collaboration with the local management team and in accordance with Agency policy directions, service standards and financial targets, provide a high level of strategic and clinical influence, to ensure:
    • the highest standards of service delivery are achieved
    • resources are efficiently utilised
    • services are effectively integrated within the Agency
  • Provide the Clinical Director with high quality and authoritative advice on clinical services and support in meeting key strategic and operational outcomes.

Leadership Capability:

  • Provide clinical leadership, incorporating principles of best practice, managing the performance of the Clinical Unit in accordance with agreed Clinical Stream and Agency goals and targets
  • Model appropriate behaviours and ensure a culture which is aligned with the values of the Clinical Stream and supports the Agency values and strategic directions.

Operational Management Skills:

  • Manage the human, financial and material resources of the Clinical Unit to achieve agreed objectives and develop appropriate strategies, plans, protocols, and procedures that enable efficient and effective use within the allocated budget.
  • Represent the Clinical Unit within the management forums of the Clinical Stream, ensuring regular communication and consultation with Medical Practitioners and other stakeholders employed within the Clinical Unit.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

Patient Care:

  • Medical care of patients.
  • Undertake procedures as required in the area of practice.

Teaching:

  • Undertake undergraduate clinical teaching.
  • Provide supervision and training of post graduate trainees.

Additional Duties:

  • Operating independently with limited reporting, acting within clinical privileges as defined.
  • Where applicable, exercise delegations in accordance with a range of Acts, Regulations, Awards, administrative authorities and functional arrangements as mandated by Statutory office holders including the Secretary and Head of State Service. The relevant Unit Manager can provide details to the occupant of delegations applicable to this position.

d) Crimes involving dishonesty
2. Identification check
3. Disciplinary action in previous employment check
