The Department of Health is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist - Consultant Psychiatrist (512634) vacancy at Royal Hobart Hospital.

The Mental Health Inpatient Unit (MHIU) is located at the Royal Hobart Hospital. It works closely with other mental health services including CL psychiatry, Mental Health Short Stay Unit, the Acute Care Stream and Continuing Care Stream.

A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.


Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 in accordance with the Salaried Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Agreement 2019

  • Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Levels 1, 2 and 3 as described in the Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award.


Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award

Period of Employment

Permanent full-time day work (with on-call), working 76 hours per fortnight commencing as soon as possible.


Primarily in the Mental Health Department at Royal Hobart Hospital (which includes an acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit (MHIU)) and associated step-up/step-down facilities. It may also include work in other parts of Mental Health Services such as at Millbrook Rise and Continuing Care Stream

Essential Requirements:

  • Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty.
  • Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements)

*Registration/licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of these may be checked at any time during employment. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure that registration/licences remain current and to advise the Employer if their circumstances change. This includes notifying the Employer if a registration/licence is revoked, cancelled or has its conditions altered.

Primary Purpose:

Provision of specialist Mental Health Care.


Patient Care:

  • Medical care of patients.
  • Undertake procedures as required in the area of practice.
  • Participate in after hours on call roster.


  • Undertake undergraduate clinical teaching.
  • Provide supervision and training of post graduate trainees.


  • Maintain involvement in research activities
