Job Description:

Seeking an OPS who is highly motivated and willing to support various tasks in the Sweet Corn Breeding and Molecular Biology Laboratory of Dr. Marcio Resende in the UF-IFAS Horticulture Department. The assistant is expected to assist in our research projects as needed, which may include organizational tasks, molecular biology lab activities, data entry, cleaning and providing support for various projects within the lab (e.g. maize plant propagation in both a greenhouse and field setting, assisting in photographing leaf and ear phenotypes, among others).

Applicants with an interest in plant biology, phenotypic characterization in both a field and greenhouse setting, corn pollinations, with some introduction to molecular biology and quantitative genetics are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience in wet lab techniques, bioinformatics, and statistical analysis using R would be beneficial for the position.

Expected Salary:

$10 - $15 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

An associate's degree and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area
  • Experience in a wet lab setting making solutions, using a pipet, and sterile technique
  • Experience using Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal personal skills
  • Reliability
  • Pro-active work approach
  • Willingness to work in a field or greenhouse setting with exposure to allergens (e.g. corn pollen), extreme heat, humidity, and dust
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs or more
  • Ability to work 30 or more hours a week.
