Why Tasmania?

It’s different here.

Life in Tasmania provides a quality work/life balance. Here you can pursue what drives you, both professionally and personally.

Today, as the rest of the world feels increasingly generic, our different-ness – our Tasmanian-ness – is among our most valuable assets. We invite you to be part of this special place, to quietly pursue the extraordinary, whether it be bushwalking, mountain biking or paddock to plate dining.

Who Are We Looking For?

We are seeking motivated and experienced Staff Specialists in Infectious Diseases to work for the Department of Health across the North West Region.

Servicing a population of approximately 116,000, the medical services across the North West region of Tasmania are based primarily at the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) in Burnie and at the Mersey Community Hospital (MCH) in Latrobe, close to Devonport. Both sites provide acute and sub-acute services.

The two hospitals both have busy emergency and general medical departments. Both Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics are primarily located at the NWRH with outpatient services at both sites. A busy general orthopaedic and general surgical service is based at NWRH with the MCH providing predominately day surgery cases. A rehabilitation service is located in a purpose-built ward at the MCH. There are extensive outpatient services for a range of subspecialty services.

The Infectious Disease service is relatively new to the North West. The position covers off both major North West hospitals, including district hospitals, and primary health. The service includes two Staff Specialists in addition to, Registrar and RMO support. There will be an opportunity to apply to RACP to have the Registrar term accredited for specialist training. This position will be attractive to highly skilled and motivated medical professionals who view challenges as opportunities and is driven by a passion to improve healthcare in the complex world of modern health systems. The right applicants will play a key role in developing health care at both patient and system levels.

The DoH offers a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate clinical training program, with close ties to the University of Tasmania through the Rural Clinical School. As such, you will be responsible for providing leadership and help with the delivery of the Undergraduate general medical education program.
