Job Description

UF Information Technology (UFIT) is currently seeking a Computer Operator 1 to join Infrastructure and Communication Technology (ICT) Services, a unit within UFIT.

Employment with UFIT provides an excellent opportunity to work with other employees dedicated and focused on understanding and interpreting the technological needs of the University of Florida’s innovative and inspirational community.

As part of ICT, you will join the Single Operations Center team, which is the foundational support team for UF Information Technology. This team is a 24x7x365 team that supports the university’s success through service and operational excellence. As a Computer Operator I, you will work closely with teams from across UFIT and your peers to aid in the monitoring of UF’s systems and services. You will be responsible for monitoring the status and operators of systems, responding to customer inquiries, reporting incidents, and monitoring alerts.

Some key responsibilities and characteristics of this position are:

  • Monitoring the status and operations of systems and contacting appropriate technical staff as escalation is required
  • Monitoring critical batch processes while responding to abnormal conditions, as appropriate.
  • Assist with support of the Florida LamdaRail Network Operating Center as well as UFIT’s Data Center’s and Core Infrastructure Buildings
  • Assist with UF Computing Help Desk tasks and Single Operations Center documentation, as needed.

Expected Salary:

Minimum Requirements:

An associate’s degree; high school diploma and two years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree and/or a few year’s experience working in an operations center, or equivalent Information Technology support center and have familiarity with;

  • Modern computing and networking terms and concepts (including general data networking and Microsoft (MS) Windows operating systems)
  • System or Network Monitoring
  • Incident Ticketing System

Preferred skills, expertise, and experience:

  • Computing and networking terms/concepts
  • Familiar with a service request or incident tracking system (such as Cherwell)
  • Systems and Networking monitoring systems (such as Nagios)
  • Flexible, self-motivated, self-starter
  • Ability to understand and communicate technical information effectively both verbally and in writing

To be successful in this position, the incumbent must:

  • Take initiative and complete tasks efficiently
  • Have excellent customer service skills
  • Have a flexible schedule to work day, evening, or night shifts (as needed)
