Job Description:

The UF Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine is seeking a biological scientist who will provide high quality, state-of-the-art histology and immunolocalization services to research faculty and investigators. He/She will be responsible for performing a variety of established laboratory procedures as well as have the research experience to work independently and participate in troubleshooting techniques as needed.

Duties Include:

50% - Harvesting, fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining of paraffin and frozen sections. Quality control (QC) of all processes following Good Laboratory Practice standard operating procedures (SOP).

25% - Immunolocalization (enzyme, fluorescent) for proteins using multiple primary and secondary antibodies with troubleshooting ability.

10% - Microscopy and digital slide scanning with image analysis for collecting and evaluating special stains or immunolocalization data accumulated in ongoing research and preparing statistical analysis of the image analysis.

5% - Immunolocalization for DNA/RNA using in situ hybridization. Provide consultation with submitters regarding experimental design and selection of optimal probe type to maximum outcomes.

5% - Special staining (PAS, PAS-D, AF-H&E, etc.)

5% - Maintenance of laboratory records, performing literature and product searches, data entry into lab databases. Maintenance of laboratory equipment according to SOP, reagent preparation, proper disposal of chemicals/ biological material, and overall general maintenance. Assist the research manager and supervisor with other tasks as needed.

Expected Salary:

Salary range is between $45,000 - $51,000

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in histology and immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence, light microscopy (direct and fluorescence), and related techniques. Image analysis using ImageJ or similar. Computer knowledge to utilize laboratory information management system and support of GLP procedures
